Silly Season ‘thrival’ Tips
It’s that wonderful time of year where we get to take a little time off work (some of us), have a few drink, some lush food, have some laughs and kick back in the sun and look back on the year that was and hopefully spend some quality time with friends and family.
Yes this is a wonderful time of year but it can also be stressful especially for those of us with compromised health, if we have started a weight loss or health journey or if we suffer with mental health.
Here are my tips to keeping balanced, healthy, happy and grounded during this time (and all the time really!)
1. Listen to your body
Our bodies are designed to give you signals to tell you what you need (this isn’t always what we want) if you’re feeling tired or fatigue then lay down and have a rest, don’t grab another drink and push through. If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed ask for some help, delegate some tasks or time a moment to breath, get curious about your feelings and really feel what your body needs, maybe you haven’t eaten enough to support your brain and energy function or need some hydration!
2. Drink Water
Honestly this is so simple but so SO important. When we are dehydrated, we are grumpy, clumsy, lethargic, hungry (or hangry) and susceptible to getting sick. Make sure you’re drinking 2-2.5L of water each day and when hitting the booze chase each bevvie with a glass of sparkling water, go 1 for 1 so you’re replenishing your vital water stores as alcohol is very dehydrating. You can also munch down on water rich foods like cucumber, celery, watermelon, salads and fresh fruits (stay away from fruit juices though as these are missing a lot of the amazing nutrients of whole fruits). I love jazzing up my H20 by adding some sparkle from my soda stream, chopped fresh cucumber, mint and lime, delish! Fresh berries and rosemary is also yum. Try some cold herbal teas too these add some extra plant nutrients into your life as well as hydration shameless plug… you can grab some from my website! A little side tip… leave a bowl of water out for the local wildlife too!
3. Be kind to yourself
I like to follow a 80/20 rule… 80% of my day is spent doing what my body needs. good nutrition involving a whole foods, plant based diet with no processed foods and minimal meat products (this is my personal preference) 2.5L of water and some movement 45mins-1hr each day. The other 20% I eat some chocolate, gelato or indulge in a cheese platter, have some red wine or a gin and tonic and DON’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT. If you’re going to indulge then enjoy it because that’s what indulging is for right?! It is the guilt and shaming that causes the binging, falling off the wagon, self-doubt and giving up not the indulging itself. Go and enjoy yourself and also look after yourself!
There you have it! They are my 3 main tips for thriving this silly season! And obviously be sun safe guys ;)
Have a Magical Christmas and New Year!
